Bringing Order to your Linen Closet

In theory, a linen closet is a perfect haven for storing linens such as extra bed sheets, towels and blankets. In practice, many people make use of this versatile storage space for linens, plus a horde of other items that just do not seem to belong elsewhere. In this case, the versatility of a linen closet can become the enemy as items seem to keep going in the closet but never make it out. The resulting chaos can make you forget you own half of the contents of the linen closet, much less put them to use.

The first step of instilling order in your linen closet is the same inevitable first step of any closet organization endeavor--remove everything from the closet. This will give you an accurate idea of the amount of space you have to work with, and may help you find some things you forgot you had. Next, assess with brutal honesty which items you want to keep and which to donate or throw away. Once you have determined what items to keep in the closet, it is time to convert the linen closet into a functional, accessible and tidy storage area once and for all.

The key to linen closet organization is establishing a balance between long term storage and accessibility. Reserve easily reachable, eye level shelves for the items that are most frequently used, such as towels and washcloths. If your linen closet serves double duty as a bathroom closet, items such as toothpaste and other often used hygiene products should also have a place on an easily reached shelf. Particularly if you have a collection of hygiene products or other smaller items, utilize trays, baskets or other containers to keep products in place and make for a clutter free closet.

One of the major challenges of maintaining an organized linen closet is the tendency of linens to unfold and maneuver with time and closet use, resulting in a disheveled mass of sheets, pillowcases and the like. There are a few ways you can combat this problem in your linen closet. You may consider purchasing a few appropriately sized, clear storage bins in which you can stack folded sheets, pillowcases, and blankets. Another option is to use shelf dividers, which will keep stacks of linens independent while taking up little shelf space. Another space saving method of keeping linens separated is utilizing vacuum compressed storage bags, which minimize the area consumed by your linens while protecting them from dust, moisture and insects.

As you create permanent, functional storage in your linen closet, organize it in a way that facilitates ease of upkeep based on the way you uses the items kept inside. Perhaps you separate sheets that are often used from less frequently used ones, or organize them according to size. Whatever your strategy, be sure to return items to their designated spaces after use, and periodically straighten the closet to keep it as tidy as the triumphant day you organized it.

Magic, Monsters and Closets

The closet has been around for many many years. We all know it as a convenient place for storage. Closets come in many shapes and sizes - ranging from the simple rectangular unit with just a clothes bar inside to the modern closet organization system. Closets have evolved from being just a simple storage unit to a complex multi-purpose fashionable storage system.

Even with the emergence of modern closets, the old antique closets will still live on for years to come. This is because the old antique closets not only come with storage space; it also comes with an aura of mystery and magic. These old antique closets are usually designed to be a huge storage space. There is more than meets the eye though. The old antique closets are built with multiple hidden pockets of storage as well. A concealed panel at the back of the closet opens up to a secret area, the bottom of the drawers gives way to more hidden pockets and sometimes only a certain combination of movements will open some other secret storage within the closet.

The look of an antique closet itself lends a lot towards magical myths and legends. Detailed sculpting of lions, dragons and gargoyles are often seen as are carvings of mystical symbols. Coupled with a big mirror in the front, most antique closets look like a gateway to another world.

A lot of children's stories ride on the dimensional gateway look of the antique closet. Writers often scribe tales of wonderful worlds that exists on 'the other side' of the closet. Stories like the recent movie adaptation of Narnia takes the mystery of the antique closet and spins it into a tale of adventure for children. The closet in Narnia - termed as wardrobe - served as the gateway to another world with magical creatures such as centaurs and satyrs.

Another popular angle of the closet mystery used by authors lean towards scaring children. The popular monster in the closet tale has been spun many times over and has spawned many variations telling the tale of monsters that come out at night from the closet in a child's bedroom. Disney added a humorous adventure twist in the movie Monsters Inc. where monsters from another world scare children as a profession to generate electricity for the monster world. The story ends with the closet monsters turning to comedians because laughter generated more energy.

Get Organized With 5 "Hidden" Storage Areas

Perhaps your home is very small, or perhaps your collection of stuff is very large. At any rate, you need to maximize every square inch of your storage space. You've jammed every closet, filled every shelf and stuffed every drawer. What more can you do?

As a professional organizer and designer of custom storage systems I've learned that the first step in maximizing space is to minimize useless clutter, but let's say you've pared down your collection of items to the truly useful, sentimental and/or necessary. If that's the case then it's time to become a bit of an explorer. Your goal is not exotic artifacts or chests of gold but another hidden treasure-- extra storage space! Start with the 5 "hidden" storage areas listed below, and then see how many more storage treasures you can find in your own home.

1. The back of the closet door-- One of the more obvious hidden storage areas is also one of the least used. Approximately 50% of all clients I work with fail to use this space. The back of your closet door is an excellent place to hang and store everything from shoes, to clothes, to hats and accessories. A wide variety of door-mounted systems are available to make the most of this usually hidden space-- from simple robe hooks to canvas bags capable of holding dozens of pairs of shoes.

2. Under the bed-- There's a whole closet of space under your bed! Under-bed space is often either overlooked or poorly utilized. Rather than treat the space as a large hidden junk drawer (Let's find another space for your college bowling trophies and the 5-year old tax returns!), purchase plastic under-bed storage containers particularly designed for the task. Look for ones with secure, snap-on lids that open on both ends and small wheels to make placing and removing the containers easier. This is an excellent idea when your lack of closet space requires you to rotate your clothes from season to season.

3. Above the toilet-- Rather than a single towel-bar or framed picture above the toilet consider additional storage in the form of an étagère or space-saver cabinet. These handy shelving units that fit over and above your toilet can be found in almost any style to match your décor and offer everything from simple open shelving to glass-inset cabinet doors. Depending on the style purchased they can be used to store towels, toiletries, make-up and more.

4. The garage ceiling-- Most people tend to utilize only one surface in their garage- the floor. Newer storage systems and cabinets have begun to make use of vertical wall space, but there's still one area that is almost always overlooked and underused- the garage ceiling. Many homes have garages with 9-10 foot ceilings, and for most, the two or three feet above their vehicle is simply empty space. Many storage product manufacturers now sale overhead storage racks designed to hold everything from boxes of Christmas decorations to lawnmowers. Some even come equipped with electric motors to raise and lower the platform making this solution ladder-free and lower-back friendly.

5. Stored luggage-- This has been my secret storage weapon for years. My wife and I purchased a full set of large suitcases to travel overseas years ago, and while they worked wonderfully on vacation, they became a huge waste of precious space back home. Our solution-- use them as additional storage! Over the years we have used our largest, rarely-used suitcases to store out-of-season clothing, Christmas gifts, books, and during one move, we even stored dishes in them.

Now that you've been giving a beginner's field guide to finding hidden storage treasures, lace up your boots, grab your binoculars, and see what uncharted storage space you can discover in your own home!

Ways To Improve Your Closet Organization And Design

One of the many storage spaces in your home is the closet. And when talking about closets, you usually think that the bigger they are, the better. But no matter how big your closets are, poor organization will always leave you short of storeroom. There are lots of ways to organize your closet.

1. Employ vertical dimension. You should take full advantage of the available spaces, from the ceiling to the closet's floor. The bins placed on high shelves and the roll-out chests on the bottom of the closet are great storage for the items that you don't use often. You can even put an additional closet pole particularly if the ceiling in your home is over nine feet high.

2. Consider lighting. To be functional, your closet should let you see the items inside it. The natural light coming from the window could add illumination but you should be aware that the sunlight is not available all day. At night, you badly need a well-functioning artificial light. This light should be sandwiched between the person and the things on the closet. Fluorescent lights are ideal for such purpose.

3. Be familiar with your wardrobe and your habits. Remember that a closet works well if you are aware on how you are going to utilize it. You must store the items that you used mostly up around your eye level, the less-used wardrobe below and the things that are least-used should be placed high above.

4. Visibility. If you actually see everything - from your underwear, ties and socks - you can really choose well what to wear. So use up the available accessories such as the belt and tie racks, see-through wire crates and the chests with dividers to have all the items well-organized. For optimum versatility, shelves should be movable and adjustable.

5. Don't overlook the floor of your closet. The closet's floor matters because you are going to step on it with your naked feet. If you want warmth underfoot, you can use carpet. But if you want cleaning to be easy for you, go for vinyl or wood.

6. Inspect your closet for still-air breeders like molds and mildews. The closets in your home need air flow and dehumidification to protect it from mildew, mold and insects. In this case, you can use bathroom-sized fan or a tiny dehumidifier.

7. Get rid of cedar closets. Though cedar closets help in keeping moths away, their scent can pervade adjacent spaces. So if you don't want a foul-smelling room, take your cedar closet off it.

Since organizing has been an important part of our everyday lives, it really makes sense to have it extended to our closet. A good closet organization and design can help optimize space utilization, leading to less time spent in searching for your needed items.

Closet Shelves - What Things Do You Need To Consider Before Buying Closet Shelving?

No one who has a home or apartment can live without closets. You need these basic pieces of furniture to store your clothes, linen and any other variety of things. Sometimes though, people seem to think that once you've seen one closet, you've seen them all. There are however, a variety of different closets. What you have can either help you get organized better or can make your mess worse. The parts of the closet that make the most difference are closet shelves.

Some tend to dismiss shelves as having little importance. After all, they only really hold things and any shelf can do that. There may be some truth to this but there is actually more to picking shelves for a closet than meets the eye. When it comes to choosing closet shelving, you are faced with considerations such as how beautiful they look, how practically useful they are and how much they cost.

Many people often tend to look at the cost first as a major factor in determining the kind of shelves to purchase. This is really very much a decision that you alone can make. Often, you simply have to make do with a shelf that fits your budget. Sometimes though it pays to try to scrimp and save so you can afford to buy the ones that cost a little more than usual.

Some people will immediately settle for the cheapest ones available. While there are people who are still able to get reasonably good quality cheap shelves, there are also others who end up with poorly made items. A few also have to settle for quality but plain closet shelving. Good cheap ones usually fall under the no frills category. Examples of cheap shelves are those made of metal decks and brackets. Depending on your taste and room theme, these shelves could either look okay or downright cheap. This won't work for you if you want your shelves to enhance the appearance of your closet or room.

Expensive ones basically have the same function as cheap ones. You get to store things just as effectively in or on them. They are however more expensive for a number of reasons. The high cost may stem from the fact that they are uniquely and creatively designed. They may also be made of expensive hardwood with a fine finish and less obvious joint sections. Some hardwood pieces seem to blend so naturally to your closet and overall theme that they would seem as if they were carved or etched out where they are. This is the closet shelf for you if you have a natural love for fine craftsmanship and beauty.

Some are also more expensive than others because they come in many different custom styles. Some outfits like California Closet can offer you a variety of options for shelves that will fit just your exact taste. A good idea would be to get individual decorators to help you with your closet design. They can think one step ahead of you when it comes to determining shelf length, dividers and compartments. This is something you just can't get when you settle for cheaper closet shelves and services.

Mixing solid-wood components with wire shelves and rod makes sense some cases, for instance...there are some items they want to look at and other they would like to store.
If you plan a system carefully, you can double the amount of storage area available.

It's a good idea to have a few hooks but not too many or your closet will look messy. Slide-out drawers may not be worth the cost; simple and cheap shelving usually work just as well.

In addition to the usual bedroom closet design, think about under-the-bed storage, as well as under the eaves if you have attic space. But also think about smaller pieces like file cabinets, and freestanding storage.

A combination of drawers and cupboards, and open shelves with doors offers the most flexibility. In most cases the easiest way to plan is to start with a shelf or drawer unit somewhere in the middle. It often helps to divide a large closet in half or in thirds to make it easier to find things.

Try Some Off the Wall Bedroom Closet Door Ideas

If your bedroom closet has a dilapidated solid wood door that makes your room look old and outdated, you may want to consider some new bedroom closet door ideas. There are many alternative means to covering up a closet area including screens, curtains, drapes and even sheets. Most of these are very inexpensive but prices will be determined by the choices you make. Many of these ideas are contemporary in style with a modern flair that will fit any decor.

The options that are available for bedroom closet door ideas may be a little off the wall but they are all becoming common solutions to a boring problem. One example of this is the use of drapes to cover the closet doorway. These don't have to be expensive to implement and in many cases they can be interchanged with a number of different colors and styles. They take only minutes to install and if they become soiled you can use a different color as a replacement which will also give your room a new look. It is best not to use sheer curtains unless your closet is kept orderly. Most walk-in closets may require a double set of drapes to cover the entire width of the opening.

Another form of curtains that make a great replacement for closet doors is beaded curtains. They come in a variety of sizes, styles and designs and can give your room a very modern appearance. These are not appropriate for a wardrobe though and other options for these may be necessary. These can help provide a decorative flair to your bedroom and can be found at many local department stores as well as some home supply stores such as Home Depot and Lowes. You can also use the same style of door as you would use on a pantry, utility room, laundry room or linen closet. These are usually a type of louvered door. They can be sliding, folding or swing doors and are relatively inexpensive to purchase.

Interior closet doors require a little more thought than most doors. This is because we want them to accentuate our decor and not be the center of attention. Most doors are contemporary because they contain very few lines and the ones they do contain are straight and sleek. This is the style of door that you want for a wardrobe but not necessarily for a bedroom closet.

Commercial solutions can be used on the interior of your home but are better suited to large rooms such as a gym or cafeteria. You want a design that will compliment your room's surroundings, something that is easy to change and inexpensive to purchase. Drapes, curtains, sheets and screens make the perfect choice to give your room a more modern appeal. To get more bedroom closet door ideas log onto the internet and do a general search. You will find a large array of ideas and products that can help you switch up your bedroom's appearance. Think outside the box when considering replacement closet doors.

A Guide to Closet Design Ideas

Utilizing available space is key to good interior design - and to comfortable living - and to that end a usable and well designed closet is an essential part of any design project. Closet design ideas cover many different areas, so let's have a look at some of the more useful and interesting advice when looking to utilize closet space.

Take advantage of all space

A closet may be a small area, but it must be remembered that it extends upwards, generally to the full height of the adjacent room. This space can be utilised easily and efficiently by installing high shelves with storage boxes for items that are only occasionally accessed, and down on the ground there is more space that is often underused - place boxes here for neat storage of items that are used more regularly.

Using space efficiently is essential to the effectiveness of the closet - even as far as how you choose to fold or pack different items of clothing. The closet is a personal area and should be tailored to the needs of the user - everything should be in its rightful place and the most used items nearest to hand and easy to find. Organization is a big part of designing the perfect closet, and much thought should be put into the process before beginning. Think about exactly what you need, and how it can be achieved in the space available.

Light and visibility

It is important, naturally, that a closet be well lit, otherwise the ability to see what is inside and where will be impaired. If a closet has access to natural, light this is both a good and a bad thing - light enables the closet to work, but direct sunlight causes fading in the pigments that colour clothing. For this reason it is best to place the closet out of the range of direct sunlight. A skylight can be a bonus, and artificial light can be designed into the closet to great advantage.

Light should be well placed - it should be between the user and the items so that it does not cast an unnecessary shadow - and while bright enough to allow effective identification, should not be too bright to impair available vision. When planning the light content of a closet take into account the effect of heat from bulbs, as this can be a fire hazard if unwittingly brought into contact with the clothing and fabric within.

The use of see through boxes and drawer systems is advisable for added visibility, or bins and boxes that have wire sides that one can see through. The most needed items should be at upper body height so as to be accessed easily, and hangers should be well placed for accessibility too.

Keeping it clean

The cleanliness of a closet is of vital importance when considering closet design ideas and to this end one must make sure there is adequate ventilation available. Airflow is important in that it helps keep the likes of mildew at bay, and if there is not sufficient natural airflow in a closet it may be advisable to include a fan - possibly on a timer - that aids regular airflow around the space.

Shoe Closet Design and Organization

If most individuals had only a few shoes then there will be no sense in composing an article on how to organize and design a shoe closet. If that last part of the sentence makes you think, then I have a good idea that you maybe have somewhere between 20 and 200 pairs of shoes. But that's fine because I'm going to explain the right way how to organize and design a shoe closet.

First, I'll try to help those with small space. Begin by removing all of your shoes. If you could only find 1 out of 2 shoes then these are your 1st victims for the trash bin. Anything torn, ripped, or 2 sizes too small say goodbye. Once the shoes are selected, arrange them into groups like evening, sports, work and beach. That way, when you're in a hurry it'll be a snap to find the shoe that you want.

Secondly, if you own a huge delegated or walk-in shoe closet, there could still be some problems even with what appears to be much more space. To organize and design a shoe closet of these kinds creativity still plays a big role. If the wall turns to the left side and the right side of the closet door in a walk-in closet aren't that deep design so that the shoe shelf sections are close to the doorway. Since clothes normally stick out about 22 inches or so off the wall, shoe closet need only the shoe length shoes which on an average is about 12 inches. This design stops you from conflicting with hanged clothes as you go in the closet.

Take some of these thoughts and probably come up with your own to see how you cannot only get the shoe mess under control but become more organized as well. To organize and design a shoe closet isn't that hard once you know how many shoes you need and how much storage space is needed for that pairs of shoes. With common sense and careful planning you could still have lots of shoes to use for all occasions.

Best Closet Layouts For Storage Space Efficiency

The proper closet Layouts are critical to maximizing the efficiency of your storage spaces. For every given storage space there are literally hundreds design options available. If you use computer aided design software (CAD) finding the closet layouts that meets the needs of your home or business is relatively easy. A quick check of the Internet will provide you with lots of design ideas. Most of the top closet design and installation companies provide good online software that allows you to initially design your storage area. Depending on your needs and budget you may want to call in a closet design specialist to assist you.

In the past closet design and construction were relatively simple. You basically had one clothes pole or rod that ran the length of the closet with a single shelf located above. If you have ever been in any older home you have seen these age old designs. When in use these closets have the top shelve full of boxes and on the floor is a mixture of footwear, boxes and bags of clothing. The clothes pole is full from wall to wall with very little organization. Any clothing removed from the closet looks just awful with wrinkles and stretched fabric. These old closets were fine back when most people had few clothes and only one or two pairs of shoes and boots.

Today's closet layouts reflect the changes in our lifestyles. Analyzing what you are going to store in your closet or storage area is a critical first step in any design. Obviously storage areas for a business, home, basement or garage are all going to have different requirements.

Never the less there are still just two basic types of closets. The "reach in closet" consists of a single wall layout that can be accessed from outside the closet simply by opening the closet door or doors. All shelves and/or clothes poles are located along the back wall of the storage area or closet. Reach in closets are the most common closet found in any home or office. Again maximizing the efficiency of this space requires you to itemize all the possible items that would be stored within the storage space.

Walk-in closets come in many different size and shapes. The largest walk-in closet layouts allow for at least 3 walls of shelving and clothes poles. In general well designed U-shaped closets and storage are very efficient in maximizing space. Proper design and installation of a walk-in closet will most often require the expertise of a closet or storage space specialist or contractor.

Locating the expertise that you need will depend on where you live. One of the easiest places to find assistance is you local home improvement store. Both Lowes and Home Depot provide simple closet layouts assistance. They also have contractors that can install your closet for you. If you live in an urban area most likely there will be closet and storage space designers and contractors that will provide you with the ideas and options that will meet all your storage needs.

Top Three Organizing Tips For Storing Linens

When you think of organizing your home, do you read and hear mainly about de-cluttering? That, of course, is the first step to getting your home in order. However, you also need organizing tips on storing and managing what is in your home.

Here are home organization ideas to put to use today for storing your linens and giving you easy access to them.

Ideas for Storing Your Bed Linens

If you have limited space for your linens, store them on a closet shelf in their respective bedroom or convert a dresser or armoire into a linen closet. If you do have a linen closet, consider labeling the shelves for Twin, Full, Queen, and King-sized sheets.

Make coordinated sheet sets by folding pillowcases and the top sheet inside the bottom sheet which can be grabbed easily from the closet. You may choose to roll the sheet set into one tidy roll. Rolled sheet sets stack better on your linen closet shelves and can be grabbed easily without messing up the rest of the linens.

Ideas for Storing Towels

Save space by rolling towels instead of folding them; you will find they will have fewer wrinkles. Towels may be stored in the linen closet or in the bathroom in an attractive three-shelf rack. You will find decorative three-shelf racks in wicker, wrought iron, or wood that will go with most bathroom décor. Decorative wall hooks can also be used for towels.

Ideas for Storing Tablecloths

Hanging tablecloths on sturdy hangers is a popular way to store them. Covering them with dry-cleaning or garbage bags will keep them from getting dusty. Another idea is to hang tablecloths on towel racks that have been mounted on the back of your linen closet door.

Closet Organizing Skills to Get You Clutter Free

Home organization is one of the most dreaded aspects of owning your home that you will ever come across. The two worst parts of any home are always the garage and of course our bedroom closets. Too often we neglect these areas of the home and they end up looking like a cluttered mess with no end in sight. One of the ways we can get closet organizing under control is by deciding to install some sort of closet organization system that will help alleviate our tendency to throw things in the floor of the bedroom. The same goes for the garage and the best way to tackle the garage is with storage cubes and garage cabinets. The cubes also work really well in the closets of our home to help store items that we do not use too often and also bedding and such.

There are several options in the world of closet organization and closet organizer systems. It all depends on what size closet you have as to what you can achieve as far as results. If you have a small reach in closet then a hanging closet organizer would probably be your best option. This is basically a setup that hangs from your existing closet rod and it has compartments to store various items including shoes if need be. If you have a decent size walk in closet then purchasing a closet organizer would be a great idea. One that has closet shelves, drawers and cubicles to put shoes, belts and accessories. There are a couple of ways to do this as well. You can opt to buy one and install it yourself which requires some craftsman skills such as measuring drilling and cutting wood or metal. Now if you do not have these skills you can always hire someone to come in and do this for you. They can also build you a custom closet designed to your specifications. Custom closet systems are expensive but oh so worth it if you have the room and need for one.

Companies like Closet Tailors can give you a quote on remodeling your existing closet. They are very reputable and offer discount pricing as well. Rubbermaid has a great hanging closet organizer you can purchase at Walmart, Lowes and Home Depot.

Children's Closet Organization For Winter

Children's hangers are the first step to creating space in a child's closet. The hangers you choose do not have to be boring either. Velvety smooth kids Slim-Line hangers are available in exciting colors like pink, lime-green, blue and lavender. You can color code your child's closet, dividing different types of clothing on different hangers, or you can simply match the children's hangers to the room decorations and paint.

Another exciting way to spice up a kid's closet is to decorate it with Glam Hangers. These beaded beauties are sure to encourage your child to hang their clothes and keep their closet looking nice!

Winter often means bringing out all of those bulky sweaters and coats. Space is the biggest concern among parents organizing their kid's closet for winter. Many parents have found the use of bins or laundry baskets useful for things like winter boots or stacks of sweaters. Coats can be taken out of the equation if you hang them on hooks outside of the closet or on the inside of the closet door.

Slim-Line children's hangers are very flat and keep clothing not only on the hanger, but hanging very close together so that they stay organized without taking up extra space. Another space saver that can actually save you almost 50% of your space is the use of cascading hooks or finger clips. These attach to the children's Slim-Line hangers and allow you to really get organized.

You can use the hooks or clips to hang the bottoms with the tops. For example, you can hang a pair of pants with each shirt or sweater on the same hanger, freeing up the space that would be taken by the pants on a shelf or on the hanger alone. Some people even like to use the finger clips to clip socks and underwear to the pants, so that kids can easily get up in the morning, pick an outfit and get themselves completely dressed for school in record time. Talk about getting organized!

A kid's closet may need to accommodate a lot of extras during the winter months. Shoe pocket hanging pouches make great places to store scarves, gloves and hats for the winter. Small bins are useful and inexpensive as well. Remember to keep everything on your child's level. Kids as young as two or three can learn to take care of their own things. The earlier you start the better off you will be. Cute children's hangers can be a good motivators on their own!

Make it fun for your child to keep their closet nice and neat. Offer rewards and do whatever you need to in order to make the lesson a fun one. Enjoy spending time together as you get organized and ask your child for their input. Teach them to use their childrens hangers and enjoy your time together while you organize this winter.

Closet Shelf Organizers - 3 Simple Ideas to Help Tame Your Closet

Closet shelf organizers can help take the tornado out of your closets. If you're anything like me, you have the best of intentions, but some days, especially at the end of the day, it's just quicker to throw everything in, close the door quickly and forget about the mess.

Short term, that's a plan and it works just fine. But do that too many days in a row and you'll be living in a permanent state of rebellious-closet syndrome.

The solution is a series of closet shelving organizers so easy to use, and so efficient, that they entice you into better organization.

Here are my top three picks:

Top Pick 1: Drawer Dividers
You can buy these ready assembled and either spring-loaded or regular. They are useful for subdividing everything from ties and socks to makeup and underwear. If you want, you can make your own by taking shoeboxes and adding cardboard dividers stuck down with sticky tape. Younger children will enjoy making these as a craft project and painting them in different colors and designs. The more they have invested effort in making them, the more they are likely to use them, too.

Top Pick 2: Shoe Racks
How much time have you wasted looking for the other shoe? If you ask me, there's a conspiracy and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. The easiest way by far to keep shoes together is to invest in a shoe rack. There are essentially two types and which one you prefer depends on the space you have available. If you have plenty of floor space, go for the horizontal racks which sit neatly underneath hanging space. If not, and you have either free hanging space or an available door, get the hanging racks which have cubbies for each pair of shoes.

Top Pick 3: Shelf Dividers
However carefully I fold and stack clothes in the kids' closets, it's a matter of days before everything is chaos again. Part of the problem is just that the built-in closet they use has a long stretch of horizontal with no upright to stop things getting out of hand.

The solution is shelf dividers, used at regular intervals along the shelves, which keep shirts, shorts, jeans and everything else in their allotted space. It's a quick way to reclaim order out of chaos.

If you don't want to splurge on shelf dividers, simply buy inexpensive plastic baskets which are the right shape and size for the clothes you need to corral.

So there you have it. Three simple ideas for closet shelf organizers which will stop you cringing every time you leave the closet door open.

8 Simple Home Decorating Tips and Ideas

Here are some practical and simple tips and ideas on how to decorate and significantly improve the home set up.

1. Clean the house. Get rid of all the items and equipment that are already not used for quite some time. Forget about sentimental values. There is a stock room for this non-useful objects. Say good bye to all of them. Remember, it pays to make your home more wide-spaced and practically cozier and more beautiful.

2. Consider a repaint. Soft and bright colors are a welcome note. Stay away from hot colors that may prevent your eyes from relaxing after a long and hard day from work.

3. Flowers used to be the refreshing décor at homes, but those days are over, Usually, flower bases also become the habitat for insects and gross organisms so put them away. Gardens are for flowers. Do not turn your home into a mini garden.

4. Sort the things according to their uses, functions and classifications. For example, kitchenware are to be placed exclusively at the kitchen. Bookcases are to be filled with books and magazines, not the quick stock room for miniscule dress pieces like underwear and stuff.

5. Create a mini office out of a room that is not of use. That would prevent you from turning your bedroom into the extension of your office table. The bedroom is for relaxation and sleeping, not for work.

6. Put carpets on the floor. They make up for a homier and more comfortable feel for the home.

7. Clean the bathroom. Make sure the tiles are suited to your taste. If you feel uncomfortable with the design and color of your bathroom tiles, then consider a change or a bathroom makeover.

8. Make sure the lights are properly installed. Hire an electrical engineer to make sure all electric connections in the house are still safe and are properly and functionally installed.

Overall makeover or redecorating of your home is needed if you are not comfortable with your house anymore. Seek advice and opinion from friends and family about how they think the house could be made even better.

The house is your sanctuary. Make it more comfortable.

Designing Your Own Closet

Coming up with your own personal closet design can be really rewarding. You can personalize the space to meet your specific needs. You can make it as ornate or streamlined as you wish. You can make adjustable spaces so that the closet changes with the seasons and your wardrobe.

First you just need to pull everything out. Write down the measurements of the closet. You will need to decide how much space you need for each type of item. Some things that you normally fold might take up less space if you switched over to using clothes hangers instead.

Pants take up less space if they are hung. This also helps them to stay wrinkle free. They are easier to look through and you don't have to worry about the stack turning into a muddled pile. When pants are hung up high, it is easy to look at the tags. It's a good plan if you have a lot of jeans, khaki pants, black dress pants, or other pants that all look similar.

Hanging pants on a special pants hanger can make them easier to manage. Pants hangers normally are open on one side so that you can easily slide out the pants. Cascading pants hangers are nice too, because you can hang a few pairs of pants on one hanger.

Sweaters also take up a lot of room when folded, but you may not want to hang some of the heavier ones. Sweaters can stretch and lose their shape if they are too heavy. You could opt for a wide shallow drawer in your closet, specifically for storing sweaters flat. You can mount the drawer under a large shelf where you stack t-shirts, shorts, pajamas and other items that you choose not to hang.

Baskets and bins are great for small items, like socks and underwear. You can also keep things besides clothes in bins, like camera chargers, books, tote bags, and other items that don't normally go in a closet. You can put bins and baskets anywhere. You can put them on a shelf, build small cubby-hole style shelves for them, or even put them on the floor. They keep things from getting mixed together and make the closet look more organized and clutter free.

You can customize the space as much as you wish. If you would rather have more shelves, you can build them up one side of the closet. You can shorten your eight foot hanging bar into two four foot bars, hanging one high for pants and one low for shirts. An additional one foot bar can be mounted off to one side for hanging dresses and suits. Choose the type of clothes hanger that you want based on what you have to hang.

Have fun when you design your closet. Get creative and ask friends or family for their opinions. You'll be surprised what you can come up with. Your plans can be adjusted as you consider the space that you'll save by using special clothes hangers. Shirt hangers, skirt hangers, pants hangers, and dress hangers can all keep your clothes organized and save space.

Ideas For Closet Organization

If you have a closet that is out of the ordinary, it can be difficult to find proper tips in regards to keeping things organized. Sure, there's plenty of tips for standard closets out there, but what if your closet is an exceptionally large walk in, or a tiny little apartment closet. Here are some tips for you if you are in one of those two situations.

If you have a walk in closet, there are plenty of things you can do. Depending on the size of your walk in, you might be able to incorporate just about every closet organization idea out there. If you have the type that is long and narrow, then you'll want to line the walls with an organization system to keep the large quantity of things that fit in there organized. If you have one that is more like a room than a closet you can start doing interesting things like adding a 3-way full-length mirror to check yourself out from many angles before leaving the house, incorporating an ironing board to make sure everything is sharp and crisp, and you can even include a laundry station complete with a small washer and dryer. The options are really limitless with this size closet.

With a smaller closet, you might really have to start getting creative. Some closets only have 4 or 5 feet of horizontal space, and you really have to utilize vertical space here as well. For example, remove that top shelf. You can only place a few things on that shelf before they're stacked to high to reach. Everything above that is dead space. Try removing that shelf and installing a pull down closet rack. This will allow you to move your hanging clothes up to the top, and all of that previously dead space becomes usable space that's well within reach. Now you have several vertical eft to work with, which you can use to put various combinations of shelving, shoe racks, and other organizational accessories.
